Inter-generational Relations and the Timing of Life Course Transitions and Counter-trnasitions

Abstract
Focused on marriage timing, this exploratory study examined the issues of transition and counter-transition timing and social time clock over the life course of Korean men. Using the life course perspective as a conceptual framework, this study showed how individual transition timing is affected by inter-generational context, and thereby involves conflicts and negotiation processes between generations. Indepth, qualitative oral life history data of thirty-eight men and their fathers showed the empirical reality of societal norm regarding the marriage age and its change over historical time in Korea. Since little study has been done on social age system and life course in Korea, special needs for further study and possible contribution that life course perspective could make for the understanding of the individual development and aging process in Korea is emphasized.
